Ability Composites has two CNC filament winding machines and the expertise to take on most projects. One machine is a 4-axis prepreg winder, the other is a 2-axis wet winder. Some recent projects include; pressure vessels for the aerospace market, large diameter carbon fiber tubes used in the nuclear industry, and thin walled square carbon fiber tubes for robotic systems.
Filament winding is a composite manufacturing process in which continuous fibers or rovings are applied to a shape, known as a mandrel, to create a composite part. Common filament-wound parts include pressure vessels, tubes and drive shafts. The use of a CNC filament winding machine provides maximum control over fiber placement and uniformity. Once cured, the mandrel can be removed leaving a lightweight hollow composite part.
